In the last couple of issues I have made a lot of use of the eminent Canadian scientist, David Suzuki’s comments. I think that it is only right to let you know the message that his book, " The Sacred Balance", carries. This is especially so as Dr Petrovic has often alluded to the fact that pollution is one of the many factors that go to cause CFIDS. David Suzuki complains that the media has turned away from environmental isues in the 90s, concentrating instead on econ- omic matters. He says that on November the 18th, 1992, only five months after the Earth Summit in Rio, a " World Scientists’ Warning to Humanity " was issued. It was signed by more than sixteen hundred senior scientists from seventy-one countries, including over half of ALL Nobel Prize winners.

It could be summarised as saying that the world cannot sustain present environmental practices for more than another decade or so. It states that a great change in our stewardship is required if vast human misery is to be avoided, and our global home on this planet is not to be irretrievably mutilated.This message was never published, being regarded by the Washington Post, and the New York Times as ‘ not newsworthy’.
Last word - David Suzuki addressed the Australian Medical Association’s annual conference in Perth on May the 26th. Naturally he warned that there would be increases in diseases related to pollution - asthma for instance. He said that immunological diseases (i.e. CFIDS), and cancer would also increase.

The president of Worldwatch Institute says that the most worri some developments in 1997 were irreversible fire damage to Indonesia’s rain forest, the fact that China’s Yellow River failed to reach the sea for 226 days, and global warming. The report also shows carbon emissions, carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere, and the Earth’s average temperature all rising to record heights in 1997. It also cited studies of ‘ melting icecaps in the Andes, shrinking glaciers in the Alps, and the breakup of the sea ice around Antarctica.’

Pollution - another sign.

In Atlanta the Institue for Advan ced Immunology and Ageing and the Institute for Environmental/ Preventative medicine are talking of the necessity to adopt a ‘ radical ’micronutrient/supplement approach in order to eradicate metabolic/immune problems. They are also forecasting that CFIDS will be the most frequently encountered medical syndrome in the late 20th, and early 21st century.

A question of ethics

Medicine is a profession tightly bound by ethics, starting with the Hippocratic Oath that every doctor swears. I knew that in Australia doctors were not allowed to publicize themselves although I believe that there were moves to allow them to advertise.

I don’t think that it was an ethical question that I wrestled with be fore I wrote the letter that started this. I had a couple of sleep inter rupted nights before I decided that the Australian public had a right to know that a South African doctor was curing CFS. I did not for ONE moment consider what the aftermath of this might mean for me. It was just a matter of ‘the right to know’ . I don’t know what the ethics of advertising are according to the South African code, but obviously there are no rules stopping any doctor from advertising on the Internet. Last week the Australian government said that it was giving six million dollars to the problem. ( That could cure a lot of CFS victims Mr. Treasurer ! ) Apparently the government is becoming very concerned at the number of Australians who are looking to the Internet for help with health problems. The item said that an enquiry about ‘health’ would generate two and a half million responses. I gained the impression that the money was to be spent on a special search engine for health matters.

I published the winter newsletter on the anniversary of the publication of my original letter to the local paper. At sixty-nine I was quite happy to retire once again. Obviously Dr Petrovic felt that I was achieving some success in spreading the news of his protocol so he asked me to continue and to allow the letters to be published on his website. He is very aware of the power that he has to change people’s destiny. He has brought me back to the part-time work force ( unpaid ) as a medical publicist ( ? ).His affect on the ‘young’ Dr Smith was even more dramatic. At seventy-three Professor Kilroe-Smith was semi-retired with a partially blocked carotid artery. Dr Petrovic cleared the artery in a month with vitamin E and his special antioxidant preparation.

Dr Smith, eager to tackle the looming CFIDS disaster, has returned to work. He and Dr Petrovic hope to set up a CFIDS testing laboratory . They have gained so much from the Newcastle results of Australian patients that they can’t wait to adapt the tests so that they can tailor the protocol to suit individual patients.

Having shouted from the rooftops for a year that CFS is curable it is about time that the full impact of antioxidants on human health should be discussed.

Dr. Brian Leibovitz PhD, editor of The Journal of Optimal Nutrition in America wrote this to Dr Petrovic, " I congratulate you on the use of the multiple - nutrient/antioxidant mixtures. There are very few health professionals who have come to recognise what I believe to be painfully obvious; that aggressive nutrient therapy can treat virtually all age-associated diseases.

Dr Petrovic often refers to Boxter et. al. ( Advanced Experimental Medical Biologics - 1990 ) These scientists listed EIGHT functions that antioxidants perform in the body. These include absorption of free radicals, repairing the damaged cells, modulating the immune system and the inflammatory response.

Esterbauer in 1989 proved that these effects were measurable. The major reason that Dr Petrovic wanted to collaborate with Newcastle was so that the changes to the body could be interpreted as the experimental patients recovered.

Anti-oxidants - Wider Applications

In January 1996 Penny Anne Vincent was dying and facing up to a heart-lung transplant when a friend suggested that she try Dr Petrovic as a last resort. She was also battling a flesh-eating bacteria ( incurable Pseudomonas infection ) that had developed in hospital. The word miracle is probably the most often used word in patients’ testimonials, but to think that she was back at work and writing a testimonial on April the 14th 1996 is incredible. Not only that, but she won RSA Grayem's Award , a top award in the drama field. A very strange fact about Penny is that she was a distributor for Golden Neo Life which is a very big manufacturer of antioxidants. They of course had been unable to help her.

Helen Power is a registered nurse and she gives a detailed description of the effect of Crohn’s disease, ulceratine colitis, and a fistula adjacent to the bowel. She had been very ill since 1972 and latterly was very concerned about her skin which had become paper-thin, dry, and bruised easily. She had been treated with cortisone for over twenty years ! By late 1997 she was able to say that she was well on to the road to recovery and she recognised that this was because the body was being properly nourished. The last I heard from her is that a layer of fat was growing again under the skin.

Mrs.Bester had Lupus Erythematosus, this is an autoimmune condition where immune cells turn against ALL structures in the body. After her recovery she opened a private (and highly successful) business in Heidelberg.

Tracey Thompson had CFIDS and sarcoidosis. This is another autoimmune condition whereimmune cells attack the lung structures. Tracey, unlike most RSA patients, had a long battle on the road to recovery. After nine months she made it and is now happily working in her hairdressing salon. I gave her phone numbers in the last newsletter for anyone who would like to speak to her.

From the very first contact that I had with Dr Petrovic he told me that he would like to tackle the major age-related diseases. Alzheimer’s disease ( or senile dementia ) has been mentioned , but at this stage I haven’t heard of the results of any treatment that may have been administered.

Some other autoimmune conditions which Dr Petrovic thinks will respond to antioxidants are:

# Systemic connective tissue disease - this is of course an autoimmune process against connective tissue.

# Myastenia gravis - immune cells create antibodies against the neurotransmitter acetylcholine thus creating muscle weakness . This may cause dangerous breathing difficulties etc. Acetylcholine is essential for the contraction of muscles in the human body.

# Sclerodermia - immune cells attack both the skin and the connective tissue-patients eventually look as if they have been through a drying process.

AIDS Recently Dr Petrovic sent me a copy of an article that appeared in the Alternative Medicine Review - Volume 3 - Number 1 - 1998. ( Dr John Coombs of Ontario, Canada, who is supervising CFIDS patients taking the protocol, had forwarded the article ). I learned from the hypothesis in this article that HIV only turns to AIDS if the gut becomes unhealthy. It says that patients infected by HIV virus do not die from the virus but rather from a patho-physiological process associated with the virus and a compromised immune system.
